Chapter 5: The Long and Winding Road
Transformation, development, and journeys

What is the secret of the enduring power of stories?
What allows them to accompany human beings across cultures, across time, across inner worlds?
To explore this, we will bring together three worlds:
● the world of literature and mythology,
● the world of psychoanalysis,
● and the world of therapeutic practice.
At the center of this meeting point stands a powerful narrative structure, articulated by Joseph Campbell as “The Hero’s Journey.”

Assignments
write a brief narrative (1–2 pages) about a recent, ordinary event in their lives and frame it as a hero’s journey:
● What was the “call” or disruption?
● Where was the resistance?
● What was the challenge or “ordeal”?
● What changed, even slightly?
Aim: To recognize narrative structure within lived experience.
Based on the Six-Part Story Writing (Lahad Model), you are invited to reflect:
● Which coping resources are visible?
● Which are absent or underdeveloped?
● What surprised you when you re-read your story through these lenses?
