Chapter 2: When a Book Is Opened
The text as a projective field

In this session we will continue by examining the literary qualities that invite us into this process of meaning-making—qualities that enable projection, and in doing so, open a gateway to uncharted territories of the psyche.

The Snow White Letter (To be shared in pairs)
Snow White escapes into the woods after the hunter spares her ife. She realizes she is banned from ever returning to the palace, as the step-mother will have her killed. She finds solace in the little cabin with the 7 dwarfs. She cleans and cooks and speaks with the birds and sings.
One day, as she finishes her chores and sits down by a wide tree in the garden, she reflects on her life, and decides to write a letter.
Write a letter from Snow White, at the moment she is alone in the forest. Address the letter to the character you chose and sign: Snow White.
The group will be divided into pairs. Each pair will exchange the letters and respond as if they are that character the letter was addressed to, signing by his or her name, and give that letter back to “Snow White”.
Final reflection:
● What surprised you in what you wrote?
● What feels personally familiar in this “fictional” voice?
● What became easier to say through the story, that might be harder to say directly?
